Snack Cart student smiling

The Snack Cart at Cedar Creek Elementary School (CCES) not only delivers snacks to staff each Friday, but a multitude of educational experiences for students in the life skills program.

The life skills program is within the St. Francis Area Schools Special Education Department and is designed to meet student's individual needs and meet them where they are at. The program also works on teaching students the academic skills that they need to be successful.

At CCES, the Snack Cart was developed for students to work on real-life application of skills in the areas of; math, money, reading, spelling and greetings/social skills. All students in the program are involved, including those who use communication devices, thanks to a collaborative effort with the speech pathologist.

“The students get to work on a big level of skills and we can tailor it to meet students where they are at from foundational skills to our advanced and independent learners,” said Brianna Jensen, Special Education teacher and creator of the Snack Cart at CCES. “It seems like this is something they really look forward to and we are excited to really make it a successful thing at our school.”

The Snack Cart at CCES has brought smiles to students and staff and brightens the halls each Friday.

More about the life skills program from Brianna Jensen: We work a lot on "how to be a student" and increasing their independence in everyday tasks. Being in a center base program the students are able to receive their academics at a slower pace with a focus on repetition and predictability, which helps them gain confidence and independence during their academic time. We also work a lot on functional and social skills to help improve their everyday life and once again help them become more independent. Our students are capable of amazing things and we are just here to help them get there.
